Ah, summer days! There’s art camp, lacrosse camp, trips to the pool, and frequent excursions to Rita’s, not to mention music lessons!
Isn’t summer supposed to be a break? For us parents, it’s often a nonstop juggling of schedules and running to and fro for the many different activities.
Don’t get me wrong. We love that our kids have the opportunity to do these things, but we still need to find some semblance of balance, for our sake and our kid’s.
If we’re not careful, one of the things that can suffer with this lack of balance is our child’s music lessons. Below are some ideas for not letting your child’s music lessons fall by the wayside.
5 tips to keep music lessons fun this summer:
1. Create a summer practice chart. Make a chart where you child checks off each day they practice. If, at the end of the week they meet their goal, they get a prize!
Tip: the back of a cereal box works great for a chart!
When it comes to learning your instrument, there’s one key ingredient that will determine your level of success. Without this, you can put lots of time and effort into it, and not see much progress.
That one key ingredient? Consistency.
It takes regular small incremental steps to get to where you want to go. This means that, if you want to get better at playing your instrument, you need to practice a little bit every single day. This works much better than cramming for a couple of hours before your lessons. If fact, cramming doesn’t work with practicing; you need to condition and train your muscles over time to have control and precision. A marathoner would never make it if they started training only a week before the race. No, they start months in advance and gradually increase their ability with consistent practice.
So kids, if you want to play like Justin Bieber, you need to practice even if it’s not always fun. That’s what he did and look where he’s at today.
